Self and Other offers low-fee therapy through our clinical internship program. Our interns are advanced graduate students in Seattle University’s existential-phenomenological psychology program, where the training starts from a simple premise: every person is unique, and every person has dignity. At Self and Other they continue that training in depth modalities, supervised closely by our licensed clinicians, and offer therapy to the community at a reduced cost.

We believe everyone should have access to mental health support, and the chance to experience a therapeutic relationship that creates lasting change. That’s the whole idea of this program.

Low fee doesn’t mean lesser therapy. Our interns have met Washington state’s requirements to practice under supervision, and we take real care in matching each new client with the right therapist.

How we choose our interns

We select interns for their theoretical grounding, alignment with the values of our practice, and capacity to form safe, curious, and genuine therapeutic relationships. Each intern has also undertaken their own therapy, giving them firsthand knowledge of the vulnerability and trust involved in being a client. This experience informs the care and respect they bring to their work.

How supervision works

Our interns meet weekly with licensed clinicians for individual supervision and participate in case consultation with our full clinical team. Their work is also supported by faculty at Seattle University. This coordinated structure provides close oversight of each case and ensures that clients receive thoughtful, well-supported care throughout the therapeutic process.
